Web Development Case Study

Bear Lake Guides and Outfitters has been a PG Web Designs client for over four years. Recently they came to us with a request for an updated look or redesign for their website. They wanted to add a photo gallery and some new services and also widen their site to suit the most common resolution.

We used CSS styles and text for the navigation and did some extensive keyword research ensuring that their site was search engine optimized even better than before. We also added a contact form for their clients to email them with specific questions about their different hunting trips.

After 4 years online, Bear Lake Outfitters has realized the benefits and now depends on many of their bookings to come from the internet. Most of their clients are international and drop by their website on a regular basis.

Our Web Development Process

  1. Analyze the Business: The first step in all our web designs is to take a look at your goals for your business. We ask you questions like, “Is a website appropriate at this point in your business?” and “How can a website benefit your business?”

We look for cost savers, efficiencies, ways that your website can be used as a tool and not just an advertisement.

  2. Do the Research: One of the benefits of Step #1 is that we gain an understanding of your business’s character. We learn about your customers, the way they use your services and products. The next step is to do research on the internet, find your competition and see what they are doing.

We want to do it better and make your site unique, find a niche that is not being filled and take advantage of it.

  3. Look for Ecommerce Opportunities: Once we understand your company and your market, we begin researching the opportunities your business has for making the connection between you and your customer. You may want to include a research poll or survey on your site to determine your clients wants and needs. If you have a product to sell a shopping cart application with the ability to process payments online can enable your customers to purchase products from you at their convenience.

We seek new ways you can fulfill your customer's needs, improving their experience and saving you time and money on each transaction.

  4. Brainstorm Designs: Next, we begin our design work. This process begins with a brainstorming session where we seek input from the client - looking for favorite colors and images that represent your business. Our goal is to create a unique design that illustrates what your business is about so that your customers don't have to guess. Statistics indicate that an online visitor must have their interest captured within 15 seconds or they will go on to the next site in the listing.

We ensure you get the design that creates a match-up with your customer capturing their interest so they will browse further into your site.

  5. First Draft: We then move into design mode building the first draft. This is the look-and-feel draft, showing you how it will display to the world. We also do research to find available internet addresses or domain names for your website and start looking for programs and applications that can be used to provide content or interactivity for your users.

Usability, layout and navigation are all important factors to consider during the web development and that is our main focus at this stage.

  6. Approvals: Once the first draft is approved we sit down and figure out what kind of content will be needed to complete your website. We determine how many pages are needed, finalize our research on applications or custom programming required and determine an accurate quote for the finished site.

We consult with the client again to make sure we have covered all the bases and at this point we may discuss future plans for expansion of the website as the company grows or new products are added.

  7. Final Draft: We now build your final website design, including the web address, all your text and content, images, programming, and functioning links. We present this final version to you from our temporary web server so you can click and navigate it thoroughly. When you are happy with it, we get your final approval before setting up the site on our host server.

We display the site on our temporary server until it is finalized and then upload to the new host server ensuring that you don't start paying for hosting until your site is complete and ready to be viewed.

  8. Search Engine Optimization and Training: Once the new site has been uploaded and tested, the final step is to determine the most effective keywords for the site and then optimize for search engines with keyword rich text, titles and metatags. If the client has requested the option to do his own site updates a content management system or CMS will be installed on the site and he will receive training in how to update and maintain the website.

Having the client in charge of their own site updates is always the best scenario as the website will then be up-to-the-minute current at all times and regular maintenance ensures good placement in the search engines.
