For smaller brochure and
service oriented websites, content
management programs can
give the website owner the power to make updates to their
own site quickly and easily.
However, for larger sites with product catalogs or informative
sites with content that is constantly growing a database
application
is a more cost effective and efficient alternative.
A database application is a type of application that helps
you keep track of lists of information. Database applications
make it easy to recall and update information and to create
reports of subsets of information.
Integrating a database application can greatly reduce the
cost of developing a web site in the first place and even
make
otherwise impractical sites do-able.
For example consider an online product catalog for a clothing
retailer. The clothing retailer may sell a selection of 50
different styles or types of clothing. Before database applications
the web designer would have to make 50 webpages each displaying
product
and pricing
information for one piece of clothing, a time consuming process.
Now using the database application he can design one display
template page, enter the product information
into
a database and then generate the different product pages
by combining the database with the display template to create
50 different clothing pages dynamically. Time and development
costs are reduced and the design of the catalog is consistent
with all products displayed the same way. This approach is
much more efficient than creating every individual web page
and link 'by hand'.
Database applications come with browser based administration allowing the website owner to edit, delete and add new products
instantly without ever going into or changing the design
template.
Other benefits of a database application:
- consistent display of products
- easy categorization of your product and services
- most applications come with a built-in search function
so your web visitors can find what they are looking for
quicker.
- you can turn products on and off so that they remain
in the database but are not displayed to customers -
great for items that are temporarily out of stock
- add new products and services without having to change
your whole site, just add a new category to the database
- our database application come with statistics so you
can track which items in your catalog are the most popular.
PG Web Designs has several different database applications
to choose from. Visit our Ebusiness

Database
Case Study

NR Motors is the largest RV and Recreational
products dealer in Prince George, BC. They had an existing
site which was not working for them. The hits were very low,
they could not update the content and there was no way for
prospective customers to see what they had for sale.
The database application we implemented
allows NR Motors sales staff to showcase their current instock
inventory in real-time. As new vehicles are delivered to the
lot, pictures are taken and the new item is added to the online
application. This allows NR Motors to have an online showroom
which web visitors can browse. The site is divided up into
different product lines and the showroom is categorized the
same way so visitors can view just the marine inventory or
everything on the lot.

Database Case Study 2

Howies Marine is the Arctic Cat Dealer
in Prince George. Their successful website gets lots of
traffic due to the amount of content on the site most of
which is updated by PG Web Designs. Howies needed an effective
way to market their Non-Current and Used Snowmobiles, Boats
and ATVs on their website and they wanted to be able to
add, edit and delete these items as they occured.
The database solution we installed for
them is setup to display price and payment information
on the products, allows for multiple images of the unit
and has an area for features and options allowing Howies
to enter a wealth of information through the online administration
system as the units arrive. This ensures that their site
is always up to date.
